As
I have been photographing orchids for around 30 years I have lots of
pictures! Many are 35mm slides - mainly on Kodak film - but more
recently I have been taking digital photographs. Nearly 3,000 of the
slides have been scanned as 'jpg' images, and there are over 50,000
digital photographs. They represent over 4,500 species in over 630
genera (plus around 100 hybrid genera, which are listed here but there are no photographs).
There
are over 9,500 photographs on this website of species in the genera
shown below. Maybe
it will help you identify an orchid. Since starting this project I have
obtained photos in even more genera so will be adding those as I find
the time. So come back later if you are
interested in a particular genus. If you would like a larger resolution
photo or have any questions or corrections, please contact me.
I
find it confusing that large orchid genera are maintained which have
species where the plant habit and features of the flower vary so
widely. Examples of large encompassing genera are Dendrobium, Cattleya, Epidendrum and Pleurothallis.
I believe in a narrow generic concept so that all species in the one
genus have similar plant morphology and floral characteristics. My
naming convention therefore follows published authors who have used
this approach. However, I have mentioned other generic names under
which the species may be known.
Due
to space restrictions species illustrated in the links below are
represented by only one or two photographs. I have tried to include a
close-up
view, plant habit or variation in flower form or colour. In most cases I have other photographs not shown here.
